Mama Mio (what kind of name is Mama mio? It's either Mamma mia or ... mio doesn't make sense.) claim that their products are safe during pregnancy or nursing. On the "Boob Tube" it reads: "just avoid the nipples, your baby doesn't need Boob Tube!)
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I THINK, thankyouverymuch.
As if I baby goes like "Oh yeah I am just targeting the very nipple over here mate."
On their website, they state:
"Safe and effective for the nine month s t r e t c h."
Effective, I don't know. I don't even have boobs.
Safe, I don't think so. Especially for your baby. So you might want to think twice before you use it.
Let's take a look at the ingredients:
Aqua (Water), Hydrogenated Polyisobutene, Glycerin, Dimethicone, Stearyl Alcohol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate*, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cetyl Alcohol, , Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ceteareth-20, Sodium PCA, Rosa Moschata (Rosehip) Seed Oil, Sodium Hydroxide, Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (Sweet Almond) Oil, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Oenothera Biennis(Evening Primrose) Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Oil, Squalene,Ubiquinone, Acrylates Crosspolymer Sodium Lactate, Silybum Marianum (Milk Thistle) Extract, Angelica Polymorpha Sinensis Root Extract, Taraxacum Officinale (Dandelion) Extract, Parfum (Fragrance), Dioscorea Villosa (Wild Yam) Root Extract, Serenoa Serrulata Fruit (Saw Palmetto) Extract, Trigonella Foenum-Graecum Seed (Fenugreek) Extract, Limonene, Linalool, Citral, Citronellol, Evernia Furfuracea (Treemoss) Extract , Benzyl Benzoate (from Ylang Oil).
I'll leave out the greens. It seems pretty obvious that according to skindeep.com some of the ingredients are NOT ok and are potentially carcinogenic. C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate is, according to skindeep.com, not a potential hazard but I put it in red because it is NOT biodegradable.
I really don't think you should use this product during pregnancy.
Luckily, formulators and scientists have rethought the impact of topical absorption (up to 60%), finally accepting that most of what we put on does NOT stay on. It just GOES IN. Wake up, people. Skin is an organ, is not just some leather. This is why many are concerned about nanotechnology.
You can use something really different and really natural for your skin during pregnancy.
Almond Oil (Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis Oil, for our Latin friends).
Here are some tips:
1. Only use organic oil during pregnancy. Organic means that it should be certified and that it is suitable for both food and cosmetic use. Your baby is still not supposed to EAT almond oil (remember weaning?) but at least it is really non-toxic.
2. If you are still using your regular body wash (I will do some posts later on), add some to your bubbly bottle. I would say 1/3 is enough to keep your skin moisturized.
3. Apply small quantities of almond oil right after the shower with a good massage starting from your legs in upwards movements.
4. Gently blot away excess oil with a towel you are not too passionate about and wear white clothes that can be washed at high temperatures: almond oil is the answer, but it goes rancid really quickly and it is really hard to wash it out from clothes. Whenever I put it on, I use the same clothes and wash them soon afterwards.
You'll stay natural, moisturized and cheap.
